Day 1
Your journey begins in the port town of Punta Arenas in southern Chile. Here you will take your two-hour flight across the Drake Passage to Port Stanley in the Falklands. Arrive and embark on the vessel. After settling in you will have some time to meet the expedition team and fellow passengers and enjoy dinner.
Day 2
Today you will chart a southeasterly course bound for South Georgia. The days at sea are never dull. Much of the time is spent on deck looking for whales, marine species and sea birds. There will be a series of on board lectures and presentations by Polar experts.
Day 4-11
Arrive in South Georgia, your home for the next eight days. The island is one of the most interesting areas in the Antarctic for both wildlife and the human history. Learn about the inhabitants who arrived here many years ago to hunt for whale, fur and elephant seals. Visit the whaling stations and visit the grave of the great explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton.
After the history you will focus on wildlife. South Georgia is sometimes called the ‘Galapagos of the Poles’ due to its high numbers and variation of wildlife. An exact itinerary will depend on weather conditions but a typical day could include a visit to a beach filled with a hundred thousand pairs of king penguins, have a close encounter with a fur seal colony or take a hike in search of the many sea birds.
Day 12-13
The final days are spent catching up on journal entries, or reviewing photos and swapping stories with fellow guests. The educational presentations continue to entertain. On the deck you can observe sightings of the majestic albatross, petrels and other sea birds. Take some time to enjoy a quiet moment and reflect on this epic journey.
Day 14
You will arrive in the Falklands overnight, so this morning you will be ready to explore after breakfast. West Point is known for its huge rookeries of rockhopper penguins and nesting black-browed albatross. Visit Saunders Island and enjoy the white sandy beaches that boast four penguins species: Gentoo, magellanic, rockhopper and king penguin.
Day 15
This morning you will navigate to the harbour of Port Stanley. Here you will take a transfer to the airport for your return flight back to Punta Arenas in southern Chile. It will be possible to continue by flight on to Santiago or stick around to continue your journey in Patagonia.
