The journey begins

Ignite your intrepid spirit as soon as you arrive into Belem, in the entrance to the legendary Amazon, and follow in the trail of the great explorers before you. Tread their path and soak in the atmosphere of this balmy jungle city, and its narrow alleys, where every corner reveals the tasty treats of market vendors. Here you will stay at the Hotel Regente.

An early start the following morning as you head out to Parrot Island for a glimpse of the achingly gorgeous sunrise where you can see thousands of parrots heading for the mainland, one of the most colourful spectacles on the Amazon.

Riding tame water buffalo

The next day you’ll zip along to Marajo Island, a hidden oasis worlds apart from anywhere on mainland, where bicycles outnumber cars, and lazy river boats take you upstream to meet the Marajo cowboys. These interesting characters still live off the land and will take you on a tour of the grasslands to spot wild pigs, anacondas and capybaras either on tame water buffalo or horses.

Kickback and relax before you begin your 4×4 safari in search of further wildlife before heading to the site of the mysterious vanished Marajoara Indian Tribe. This ancient community is the stuff of legend, and you’ll hear the story of a how they vanished off the face of the earth – a mystery that has never been solved.

Going deeper, and deeper

Return to Belém for a night before flying to Manaus. When you arrive you will be taken to the port to board boats and navigate along through the Rio Negro system, so called because of its mesmerising black waters. They widen to a staggering 20kms from bank-to-bank, from which you can explore an intricate hidden paradise of over 400 islands.

Arrive at the Amazon Adventure Station Lodge. During the course of the next few days you will explore this part of the Amazon in depth with the help of both naturalist and local guides. Head out on alligator spotting excursions, jungle treks, fishing trips, wildlife observations and visits to the Caboclo indigenous community to learn about their life. Each day you’ll return to the comfortable lodge for relaxed evenings a delicious regional cuisine.

Further into the Amazon

Return to Manaus for a night at the Tropical Manaus before delving further into the Amazon’s deepest wilderness, as you fly to Tefé en route to the Uakari Floating Lodge.

Sitting in the midst of the wilderness, this lodge offers a stunning perspective on Brazil’s wildlife from the middle of the river. Here you are way off-beaten-path, and there are few simple delights more intoxicating than listening to the calls of nature of the dawn and dusk chorus.

Our guides will be on hand to show you the best part of the jungle, only manageable with local knowledge. Breathe in sights you never thought possible. You’ll be able to spot Uakari monkey and an incredible array of birds, reptiles and alligators as you sit in the largest protected area of flooded forest in Brazil – an area the size of England.

Kickback in hammocks as you relax alongside local villagers who have made this area their home for countless generations. Take jungle hikes and go by motorised canoe deep into the flood plains, before winding down at the lodge.

Fly back to Manaus for one last night in this fascinating jungle city before returning to the airport for your flight home.
