night of the iguana

Arrive in tropical Guayaquil stay downtown near the park full of iguanas. Our guide will show you the historic centre, then you will have time to walk along the riverfront to the artistic quarter of Las Peñas for a delicious ceviche washed down with local beer.

volcanoes and craters

All Galapagos boats now rotate at least two itineraries, for this trip on Nemo III we chose the north and west islands which have more impressive volcanic landscapes. No two islands are the same: the huge volcano like Fernandina rises for over a thousand metres above the sea by way of contrast Chinese Hat islet is a perfect mini-volcano just a few hundred metres across. Each day you visit at least two islands and also swim with sea lions, turtles and even marine iguanas. You will take a trip to the caldera of Sierra Negra volcano one of the biggest craters on the planet. The iconic tortoises roam free on Isabela and Santa Cruz so you will have twice the chance to see these huge reptiles in the wild.

A small yacht enables you to sail close to islands like Santiago, where sea lions dominate the beach, flamingos’ parade by a lagoon and reef fish can be spotted in the clear waters. You will take a dinghy ride into mangrove lagoons home to herons, turtles and rays. Kayaking is also possible in these quiet waters. At Fernandina you will see every rock covered in marine iguanas like some alien planet.

As well as the wildlife you will visit places where people have settled on Santa Cruz . Here you have the opportunity to see quite a different landscape from the normal rocky shore excursions in the jungle highlands. At both places the National Park and Charles Darwin Foundation run research stations which you will visit to get to grips with conserving this wildlife paradise.
